Crazy idea, the World Cup could be held with 64 teams

FIFA is considering expanding the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams. The idea was proposed by a South American delegation, which included presidents of countries, CONMEBOL leaders and federation heads, at a meeting at FIFA headquarters in New York.

The aim is for the 2030 edition, which marks the 100th anniversary of the World Cup, to have a very special format. In March and May of this year, this idea was put on the table by Latin Americans and was echoed by FIFA president Gianni Infantino. He has hinted that any suggestions for celebrating this event in a special way are welcome.

The 2030 World Cup will be held for the first time on three continents and in six countries: Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay, which will each host one match, while the rest will be hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco.

However, for the South American countries, this participation is considered insufficient, so they are asking for the format to be expanded. Whether this idea will be accepted remains to be seen in future FIFA decisions.
