Severe punishment in England, famous club expelled and points deducted for espionage

Southampton have been banned from the Championship play-offs after admitting breaches of rules relating to spying on rival clubs' training sessions.

The EFL confirmed that the club had illegally filmed training sessions at Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough during the 2025-2026 season.

In addition to being excluded from the play-offs, Southampton has also been penalized with a four-point deduction for next season in the Championship.

Middlesbrough, who were eliminated in the semi-finals by Southampton, are back in the final and will face Hull City at Wembley.

The investigation began after an incident on May 7, when a Southampton analyst was caught filming a pre-match training session at Middlesbrough's training ground. The man reportedly attempted to delete the footage from his phone and fled after being identified by club staff.

Southampton have the right to appeal, while the EFL is discussing with the clubs involved the further consequences of the decision.
