Silvana Braho is one of the many pensioners left alone in Gjirokastër.

Depopulation and the departure of young people has caused thousands of pensioners in the Southern District to spend their old age in solitude.

Today, Silvana is 79 years old and her husband is 86 years old, they both live in a room which drips from the ceiling when it rains.

Silvana has worked all her life as a nurse in a hospital, but she never thought that democracy would leave her alone and with a pension that can only reach the end of the month.

Poverty reigns in their home, and a mountain of medicine and longing for their departed children are the companions of their days.

"I never expected this situation, we actually asked for democracy, but not like this. I have worked for 36 years in the hospital, I do not receive any help from the municipality or the government, the pension is only for medicines, look how little I have here, the medicines with reimbursement are bad for us we get sick more. The children are gone, we are about to die, but who will bury us", says Silvana to CNA.

The villages of Gjirokastra and the city and the surrounding areas show the same panorama, lonely old people who keep their eyes on the door waiting for the children who left for emigration. /CNA
