Albanians are increasingly becoming suspicious in their relations with others. 89 percent of them do not trust each other and are very reserved in relationships with people.

According to the survey of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) that measured the perception of security in the Region, the citizens of Albania and Kosovo show higher levels of mistrust in relations with people (see the graph below).

In contrast, citizens of Serbia and Montenegro were less distrustful than the rest of the Region. For example, 27% of Serbs claim that other people can be trusted, compared to only 11% of Albanians.

Unlike the Region, Albanians display high levels of trust in the family. 95% of the respondents affirmed that they trust the family, a higher percentage than in the Region, where generally only 77% trust the family.

Albanians also stood out for the low trust they have in the community that surrounds them. Only 7 percent fully trust the neighborhood where they live, while the regional average is 17%.

Also, 65% of the respondents do not trust the public administration, the highest level in the Region. Only 1% of the respondents have confidence in the public administration compared to 4% which was the regional average.

93 percent of Albanians do not trust people they meet for the first time.

Institutional trust is significantly low across the region, with political parties, social media, parliaments, the press and television being the least trusted institutions.

There are a few exceptions where the majority of respondents have faith: religious organizations (60% a lot and quite a lot of faith); armed forces (55%); police (54%); universities (53%); European Union (55%) and NATO (54%). In the region, there is less trust in political parties (80% have little or none), social media (75%), parliament (72%), the press (71%) and television (65%), although there is more than 50% mistrust in all other institutions.

SecuriMeter 2024 data highlights that corruption remains a widespread issue in the Western Balkans, with 83% of citizens perceiving it as widespread, although fewer believe it is "very widespread" compared to last year.

While there is a slight decrease in bribery reports, particularly in health care and police interactions, high-level corruption remains a significant concern./ Monitor Magazine
