In a society where young people often leave the country in search of better opportunities, there are still inspiring stories, stories of young people who decide to stay and build a future by serving their people and community.
One of them is Gerald Gorari, a 30-year-old from Korça, who has chosen to build his professional life in the field of physiotherapy, a profession that requires not only knowledge, but also dedication, patience and a lot of empathy.
In an interview with CNA TV, Geraldi candidly recounts his beginnings, the period when physiotherapy in Albania was still in its early stages and the lack of professionals was a challenge in itself. His path to this profession has not been ordinary.
An early childhood trauma, when he himself needed the intervention of a physiotherapist to rehabilitate his arm, became the key moment that left deep marks on his mind.
He tells how his love of sports, family support, and his social and empathetic nature led him to pursue this field, with the strong conviction that a physiotherapist is not just a professional, but often an emotional and physical support for people in difficult times.
"The starting point is a trauma I suffered when I was very young and the need to rehabilitate this trauma has been difficult. I was forced by my family to find a physiotherapist wherever he was. Since he, as a specialist, rehabilitated my arm, this was the main starting point for pursuing the physiotherapy branch. Later, during high school, I liked to do different sports and physiotherapy was very important in the sports section, but from 2003 when I was a child until 2010, physiotherapy did not have a great development in Albania. Seeing the need in the market that there was a great need for physiotherapists, it was a personal choice. I also talked to my family about choosing this branch, so my motivation was to be as close as possible to people in need, since I am also a bit empathetic and very social by nature. This has been more or less the motivating part of this profession that I have chosen."
But the challenges didn't end with choosing a profession. For Gerald, the real difficulties began as soon as he took his first step towards university.
Moving from his hometown to the capital was not easy. He remembers it as a period of facing many unknowns, where not only the pace of life, but also the academic demands were a challenge in themselves.
After completing his studies, Geraldi noticed that private clinics were scarce, while employment in the state system was almost impossible. Despite this, he did not give up and decided to build a professional name step by step, seeing every situation as an opportunity to learn, improve, and build confidence.
"It was difficult at university, since I was leaving my city of Korça, a small city where life is slower than Tirana, that's where the first difficulties of a physiotherapy student began. The literature wasn't as good as it is now and we were forced time and time again, together with the professors, to read as many books as possible and do as much scientific research as possible, with papers to be as up-to-date as possible. The lack of a market, since there weren't many clinics, when I finished my studies, employment in state hospitals and health centers was almost impossible, it was very difficult, almost zero."
After facing a lack of opportunities in the job market and a strong desire to practice the profession he had chosen with such dedication, Gerald decided to take a bold step, to create something of his own.
With the help and guidance of his professors, he opened a small clinic, a modest space, but with a great desire to serve patients as a professional.
However, the beginning was not easy at all. He realized that his city had a great need for professionals in the field of physiotherapy. The number of patients began to increase significantly and many of them found in Gerald not only physical help, but also a human and professional approach that was often lacking.
"As a result of necessity, I had the idea to open a physiotherapy clinic and here my motivators were my professors, my family and my wife, so all my close people motivated me by seeing my passion for physiotherapy. And that's how it started. Consulting with my professors, for whom I want to express my gratitude, I opened a small clinic in which when the first patient came, it was very embarrassing. For all the first patients, I was consulting with my professors, despite the fact that I had attended many trainings after school where I felt I had the ability to treat patients. But, the telephone consultations with the professors gave me the confidence to continue. After returning to Korça, I noticed that I had a high number of patients and the need to be a professional physiotherapist in this city was more than obvious."
After two years of intensive experience with the first clinic, he realized that the needs of the city of Korça were not limited to physiotherapy.
This prompted him to take another important step in his professional path, the establishment of the "Intermedical Clinic", a larger and more complete center, where health services went beyond the boundaries of physiotherapy. Collaboration with foreign doctors gave another dimension to his work.
"After 2 years, since people needed different specialists, not only physiotherapists in the city of Korça, it forced me to open the Intermedical Clinic, where we are now, which is in collaboration with a very large laboratory clinic and several private hospitals in Turkey. This led me to bring in several specialist doctors, mainly focusing on orthopedics, neurology and neurosurgery, because physiotherapy is a branch that is closely related to the musculoskeletal and neurological parts. From this moment, when we also started visiting foreign doctors, I had a great deal of experience in diagnosing patients and I feel lucky to have achieved this, since my colleagues or other students of that period found it very difficult to be near an orthopedic or neurology specialist to learn. This made me look at all patients with a different eye, not like during my studies or at the beginning of my career. The reality of a student is very different for what he has benefited from. from school compared to what you see up close with patients."
Over the years, Gerald has treated hundreds of patients, each with their own history, challenges, and needs. He is one of those professionals who does not see patients simply as clinical cases, but as individuals with human stories who require not only physical treatment, but also moral support.
Gerald admits that there have been cases that have deeply affected him and have remained in his mind even after the treatment has ended. For him, each patient is as important as the next.
"The cases are numerous, I do not want to single out any of them, because each case is unique. Since a physiotherapist must have very high professional skills, he must also have the qualities of a very good person, creating credibility and motivating the patient, and of course giving him what he wants at the end of the treatment.
However, there are cases that remain in the mind of a physiotherapist, over a period of 7 years, where mainly the most difficult cases are neurological ones, which require time, and the pressure from the family is very great. In these cases you have to give your maximum, just like with all patients, but neurological cases are the most difficult to treat."
Beyond treating patients and running a modern health center, Gerald Gorari is a clear and strong voice for raising awareness about the importance of healthy living.
He believes that many health problems could be prevented if people were more attentive to their bodies and lifestyles. According to him, physical and mental well-being are closely linked.
"People should increase their quality of life and first of all, do not neglect any pain. Pain is a signal that something is wrong with the body and they should consult a medical professional. Secondly, mental well-being should be very good by reading and doing physical activity. Physical activity is really very important, which all people should focus on. They should perform a different sports activity at least three times a week, such as volleyball, basketball, tennis or their passions. We also have the way of eating, where we should avoid carbohydrates and sugars as much as possible, to maintain a good body weight. Work is also very important. If I have a day off, I can't wait for it, but the motivation that my patients give me makes me can't wait to get back to work."
Today, Gerald Gorari is not just a successful physiotherapist but an example of a man who turned a challenging personal experience into a life mission to help others.
With passion, dedication, and a clear vision for the development of health services in his city, Geraldi managed to create a model that exceeds expectations, bringing a new spirit not only to physiotherapy, but to all medical care in Korça.
His profile is a reminder that every good professional is not formed only in school, but above all, by sensitivity, ethics and the desire to serve people. And Gerald Gorari, with his work and humility, is living proof of this philosophy./ CNA
