"I would have ethnically cleansed Kosovo in 1998"/ Scandalous

The Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government in Serbia, Snezhana Paunovic, made a scandalous statement during an interview, which has caused numerous reactions.

During the interview for Kurir, the Serbian minister said that if she had had the freedom of action that Slobodan Milosevic had, she would have "ethnically cleansed Kosovo."

"For our shortcomings and stupidity, if I had been free like Milosevic, I would have ethnically cleansed Kosovo in 1998 ," said the minister in Aleksandar Vu?i?'s government.

There has also been a reaction from the European Union regarding this. EU spokesperson Anitta Hipper said that the union expects all leaders to behave responsibly and refrain from any inflammatory rhetoric.

"The fundamental principle is that there should be no place and there is no place in Europe for rhetoric that justifies and supports ethnic cleansing. Such statements run counter to the values ??of human dignity, reconciliation, accountability and good neighbourly relations on which the EU is built. They also run counter to the commitments made by Serbia in the framework of the EU-facilitated dialogue for the normalisation of relations with Kosovo. Therefore, we expect all leaders to behave responsibly and refrain from any inflammatory rhetoric and at the same time contribute to creating an environment of trust and regional stability ," said Hipper.

She also further stated that the EU is also committed to identifying missing persons and not only through the dialogue process.

"There is no place for such rhetoric and as was said there have been a number of statements over the years. As for the importance and recognition of the facts and also the honoring of the victims and at the same time the support for the identification of missing persons and for the promotion of a peaceful coexistence between people, this is something that we are doing both in the facilitated dialogue and also in the enlargement process ," Hipper said. /CNA
