Fire breaks out in a building in the center of Brussels / Several people lose their lives

Several people have reportedly died in a fire that broke out in a building under construction in central Brussels, while rescue teams continue the search for six workers who are still missing.

According to local authorities, the bodies of an as yet unconfirmed number of victims were found in one of two elevators at the construction site, where major renovation work is underway on the "Place de Brouckère" square.

Labor inspection service spokesman Brecht Speybrouck told Reuters that rescue teams had limited access to the elevator cabin, where they found the bodies of two or three people.

He announced that a total of six workers are missing, while the cause of the fire outbreak remains unknown and is being investigated by authorities.

Firefighters announced that over 200 workers were at the site at the time of the fire, while three people were transported to the hospital for medical treatment. /CNA
