Father Pjetër Mëshkalla is remembered/Former political persecutors:

Father Pjetër Meshkalla was commemorated in an event organized by the University of Shkodra "Luigj Gurakuqi" in collaboration with Vitor Martini, a former political prisoner. This event was organized where 58 years ago a meeting to unmask Father Pjetër Meshkalla took place on April 29, 1967.

"I have called all the parties, the mayor, religious institutions to this hall and thank those who have come, but thank you also to those who have not come because by not coming those who are not worthy to hear the holy name of Father Meshkalla. The representatives of the Communist Party Committee told Meshkalla that we have called you here to introduce you to the people and to show how much this people loves you, Father Meshkalla stood up and said I know the Catholics, Orthodox and Muslims well, they are a very religious people, but it would be a crime if I were to ask for the support of this people today because you have linked them to a piece of bread. If you want to raise your children with a strong moral education, you have Father Meshkalla as your compass", said Martini.

Professor Arben Prendi from the Department of Literature spoke about the figure of Father Pjetër Meshkalla, one of the clergymen who was sentenced to prison twice by the communist regime.

“Father Meshkalla, with selfless courage, came out publicly with sermons and writings against the bloody reforms that the communist regime was undertaking. Meshkalla was arrested in 1946 and sentenced to 15 years in prison, and after suffering in the infamous Burrel prison, he was released in 1960, being denied the right to practice the priesthood. Father Meshkalla declares that it is true that he preached against communism, knowing full well that it was a system against God. He was arrested for the second time in 1967 for Agitation and Propaganda, at the height of the cultural revolution of communism, which culminated in the closure of religious institutions and the proclamation of socialist Albania as the only socialist country in the world. This sentence comes after a letter that Father Meshkalla sent to Mehmet Shehu on April 5, 1967. In that letter, he clearly and firmly expressed his revolt against the closure of religious institutions and the psychological and physical violence that "It was being exerted on the Albanian people," said Prendi.
