International Day Against Child Labor/ Appeal: More civic awareness needed

In the framework of June 12, the International Day Against Child Labor, the Municipality of Shkodra held an awareness-raising activity in the city. In her speech, the Deputy Mayor of Shkodra Municipality, Teuta Qyteza, called on citizens to raise awareness and contribute to the fight against this worrying phenomenon that affects the future of children, especially in the form of street begging.

"Children who are exploited for work and begging should be condemned by the entire social opinion. We must protect children, let them be free, to live their lives. They are old enough to learn, to have fun, to spend their free time with each other and not to work and even less to beg. The Municipality of Shkodra has gathered the leaders of all institutions that are involved or have an impact in this field, the municipal police, the public order police, customs and all other institutions that are involved in monitoring this phenomenon. We call on both those who exploit them, and those who direct them to those points, that they are being verified, monitored by the State Police and by all the staff of the municipality. We ask them to stop this phenomenon. Do not exploit children, they are just like everyone else's children, including yours", said Teuta Qyteza, Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Shkodra.

The focus of the activity was to promote inter-institutional cooperation, raise community awareness and raise awareness about the consequences of child exploitation, a practice that denies them the right to a safe and happy childhood.

The information brochure distributed during the event included clear instructions for citizens on steps that can be taken to protect children, ranging from reporting cases of exploitation, support through institutions, not giving money on the street, to raising awareness and supporting quality and inclusive education.

"A child who works loses the right to be a child" - is the message that accompanies this awareness campaign, to remind every member of society of their role in protecting the youngest. /CNA
