Anti-government protests/ Bulgarian MEP speaks from Korça: Citizens'

Bulgarian MEP Andrey Kovatchev shared his position today regarding the several-day anti-government protests taking place in the country.

Speaking to the media during a visit to Korça, Kovatchev said that it is up to the Albanian political class to find solutions to issues related to ecology, but also regional development and tourism.

"We are monitoring every development very closely. This is certainly up to the political class in Albania to resolve and follow all standards, especially ecological ones, with all the investments that need to be made. We are not interfering in this part, but of course there will be a text in the progress report related to the fulfillment of all laws and standards related to ecology, but also to regional development and tourism.

Regarding the effect of the protests, Kovatchev emphasized that the voice of the people is good to be heard, for the good of Albanian citizens.

"I want to say that it is good to hear the voice of the people, if everything is calm and peaceful. And this is also our call to all parties in power and those in the opposition: to be calm, to listen to each other and to find the best solution for the citizens. For the citizens of Albania, the best thing is to enter the European Union as soon as possible and to enjoy our European family together, in this very challenging time for the world. We have many geopolitical problems around us and Albania is a very good ally in NATO, and now, very soon, also in the European Union," he said.

Asked about what the Albanian government can do regarding these protests, the MEP said that people should be listened to and that all environmental standards that also reflect the EU's approach should be followed.

"Listen to the people and follow all the legislation and all the environmental standards, which I am sure will also be in the European Parliament text. But, we in the European Parliament will not interfere in the internal politics of Albania and we call for good cooperation between the ruling party and the opposition parties," said Kovatchev. /CNA
