The Co-Chair of the Special Committee for Administrative-Territorial Reform, Luciano Boçi, requested today in the Assembly the extension of the committee's mandate, arguing that its work is still far from complete.

In his speech at the plenary session, Boçi stated that the commission cannot be closed without completing the hearings, analyzing the results of the 2014 reform, and drafting and discussing a final report.

According to him, hearings have not yet been held for Tirana, where about a third of the country's population lives. He added that communities that have submitted requests to the commission have not been heard either.

"The commission is in the middle of its work. A reform or a final report cannot be requested when the commission has not implemented the calendar and does not yet have a product," said Boçi.

The opposition MP accused the majority of seeking to close the commission without respecting all the links of public and parliamentary consultation. He claimed that behind this move lies the intention to merge several municipalities, without first consulting with citizens, local representatives and the mayors themselves.

In his capacity as co-chair, Boçi said that he has officially submitted the request for the extension of the mandate. He called on the deputies to vote for the extension of the deadlines, emphasizing that such a decision would protect the seriousness of the process and the authority of the Assembly.

Meanwhile, the head of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, opposed the request to extend the term of the Special Commission for Administrative-Territorial Reform, arguing that its mandate has ended and cannot be extended. /CNA
