EU Integration/ Demo: A tsunami is coming, mayors must pick themselves up

The Minister of State for Local Government, Ervin Demo, in a press conference, responded to journalists' interest regarding territorial reform, the work of municipalities and how this change will affect the EU integration process in Albania.

According to Demos, this is a difficult challenge, considering it a tsunami in terms of the tasks that municipalities must fulfill in order to avoid returning to the problems they had before.

"The moment we commemorate this dream for decades, that is, integration, we are all preparing for the chapter to close in 2027. I think that even when we are in the EU, we have a lot to do. The integration process is very complex. The government's objective of closing the chapter in 2027 does not mean that everything has been resolved, but requires a radical transformation of all institutions.

A tsunami is coming in terms of the tasks that municipalities must perform.

I believe that mentality is more difficult to change than a legal package.

This new reality requires a lot of energy from all institutions, including local ones. They must be willing to raise themselves to another level. We must facilitate them with instruments, because this is a common challenge. It is a challenge that belongs to the whole of society, not just the institution.

"This affects every cell of society. It is a simple challenge, but the important thing is that we have the right approach and are building instruments to successfully respond to this journey," Demo said./ CNA
