Editorial with Vu?i?/Shehu requests interpellation with Rama: In violation of

Democratic Party MP Tritan Shehu has filed a request for an interpellation with Prime Minister Edi Rama, regarding the editorial published in co-authorship with Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i? in the German media Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

In his request, Shehu emphasizes that the positions expressed in the Rama-Vu?i? editorial, which proposes a new approach to the European Union's enlargement process towards the Western Balkans, contradict the resolutions previously adopted in the Albanian Parliament.

According to the Democratic MP, despite the fact that it is an article, it reflects a political will of the Prime Minister and consequently of the Albanian government, having direct political and diplomatic consequences in relations with international partners.

Shehu underlines that the proposal to give up on full EU membership and focus only on integration into the internal market and the Schengen area conflicts with Albania's strategic objective of full membership in the European Union.

Shehu's post

I filed a request for an interpellation with the Prime Minister regarding the publication of the article co-authored by Mr. Vu?i?. The text of the request is as follows:

— On February 28, 2026, Prime Minister Mr. Edi Rama, co-authored by Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i?, published an editorial in the German media Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Together, they made a public proposal to the European Union for a new approach to the enlargement process towards the Western Balkan countries, giving up full membership, but contenting themselves with an integration of the candidate countries only into the internal market and the Schengen area.

Despite the fact that it is an article, it cannot but reflect a political will of the Prime Minister and consequently of the Government of Albania, all the more so when it is co-authored with the President of Serbia. As such, it necessarily has regional political and diplomatic consequences, in our country's relations with Brussels and partner countries, which makes this parliamentary interpellation imperative.

In fact, this position of Prime Minister Edi Rama contradicts the resolutions previously adopted in the Albanian Parliament, which clearly express the will for full membership in the EU as a major and strategic objective, reconfirmed through the joint declarations of Albania-EU within the framework of the Interparliamentary Stabilization and Association Committee. At the same time, this violates the principles of the Albania-EU Negotiating Framework, which constitutes a contractual commitment with the European Union. And most importantly, this violates the strategic interests of the Republic of Albania, the Republic of Kosovo and the Albanian factor in the region as a whole.

In order to effectively guarantee the will expressed by the Assembly, as well as national strategic interests, in my capacity as a deputy of the Assembly of Albania, based on Article 80, point 1 of the Constitution and Article 96, points 1 and 2 of the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly, I request the development of an interpellation with the Prime Minister, Mr. Edi Rama, regarding the above.
