Shame on the colleagues who found themselves in the hall with Ambrosia

What happened at Edi Rama's press conference was not a banal altercation, nor a moment of nervousness and common anger between a journalist and a politician, but an ugly way of degrading our media.

Almost none of the representatives of the fourth estate who witnessed that scene showed solidarity with their colleague, Ambrozia Meta. On the contrary, most lowered their heads like bewildered chickens, mentally imagining the reputation that their owners could make by benefiting from the status of "strategic investors."

In a normal press conference, in a democratic country, it is an unwritten custom for journalists to sympathize with their colleague's unanswered question. If the first one doesn't get what he wants, the second one repeats the same question.

But, on the contrary, we saw on the screen, a man who gestured to Rama to leave aside the debate with Ambrozia and a woman who expressed impatience to take the microphone in her hands, although what the public wanted to hear was left in the air. Moreover, none of them moved from the hall, when the prime minister interrupted the conference, to exclude their “rebel” counterpart from it. Ambrozia went out and everyone else thought this was normal, continuing the constructive conversation as if nothing had happened.

But, to understand this incident, it is good to know its context. Journalist Meta asked Rama, in the eye, a question that everyone is thinking. Why is he worried about SPAK's request for the imprisonment of Balluku, his deputy who is accused of 1.1 billion euros of tender abuses, when he himself has asked for pre-trial detention for those who steal energy, build without permission, and even enter the field to disrupt a football match. That's it, nothing special, only the justification of these two standards was requested by Rama.

Instead of answering, he chose to mock Çim Peka, to portray Syri as a media outlet that launders money, to describe Ambrozian as an extension of the opposition protests, which had illegally entered his royal court. It is not difficult to understand how much basis this uncontrolled slogan has. Just like with Peka, Rama has behaved with half of the country's journalists. The accusations he makes about Syri, a different version of which his former deputy prime minister Ahmetaj has shown him, he has previously made about Top, which he labeled, when he liked, as a fine-paying screen, or when he sent greetings to Sandri of the Klan.

But, the issue here is neither Rama's deceptions, nor his now desecrated coherence, nor his truths that he imposes on the members of the SP leadership through threats.

In that hall where Edi Rama behaved like a tribal leader, he was not the only one to blame. A politician does not become an autocrat just because he decides to do so. He becomes one when those around him accept such a thing. This is exactly what Ambrozia's colleagues did today. They accepted to become the backdrop for a farce that failed to convey to the public even the simplest answer, that of inequality before the law, between a football fan who is unhappy with the penalty given against his team and who, according to Rama, should end up in prison for this, and Belinda Balluku, suspected of at least 11 crimes, who wanted to remain free.

Therefore, what we saw live today is much more than a simple incident. Because it testified not only to the arrogance of a politician who refuses to publicly hold accountable those who steal in his name, but much more than that, to a media system that has been completely put at the service of this philosophy.

Of course, Ambrozia's miserable colleagues, whom the owners had sent to that conference, only brought shame to their portraits. Everyone understands that the evil lies above, goes beyond them. But through their stay in the hall, after their colleague was taken out and especially by not insisting on getting an answer to the question left in the air, they became witnesses to a stage where everyone pretends. And one can easily imagine how they will look when they appear again in the next sketch in the name of a conversation with Rama to inform the public…/CNA
