Srebrenica, a dark chapter in European history

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide, one of the darkest chapters in European history after World War II, in terms of brutality and scale. Srebrenica remains a clarion call to heal the wounds that are still open, to condemn the revision of history, and to help the process of regional reconciliation towards a better and more prosperous future.

Serbia's stance on this massacre under Aleksandar Vucic has been ambivalent, serving the interests of the moment. In 2015, Vucic, under the guise of a devout Europeanist, visited Srebrenica and expressed his anger at all those who had committed this crime.

Later, when he realized that the prospect of EU membership was increasingly remote, he returned to nationalist positions and ruthless power politics, putting himself at the forefront of the campaign to block a resolution at the United Nations that would have characterized Srebrenica as genocide. The effort and his alliances failed.

In May 2024, the UN General Assembly, in a resolution sponsored by Germany and Rwanda, designated July 11 as the International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Srebrenica Genocide. An act that politically ratified the jurisprudence of the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, which have characterized the massacre of Bosnian Muslims in Srebrenica by the army of Republika Srpska as an act of genocide.

For us Albanians, who have experienced similar crimes by Serbia, the above resolution and jurisprudence are of historical importance and should serve not only as moments of remembrance, but also as a compass for reconciliation in a destructive geopolitical environment.

Also, as a nation with a painful history, it is imperative that we build a fair balance between the suffering of innocent populations in Ukraine and Gaza, international alliances, and international law.
