Citizen awareness about public spaces

by Iris BEQIRI

Recent events in the country have once again brought public spaces back to everyone's attention. Disrespect for public spaces is an old problem. We all, everywhere in Albania, are constantly faced with such situations and, as usual, our eyes turn to politics, when this issue can also be seen from another perspective. Because beyond calls from politics, respecting public spaces requires civic awareness.

First, the concept must be understood correctly. Public spaces are designated areas designed for use by a community or by citizens. This includes streets, sidewalks, squares, parks, beaches, and other areas that serve for interaction. These areas aim to provide broad access for all citizens, regardless of age, physical abilities, or background.

The cost of civic negligence in this regard

Public spaces have long been under threat, as urbanization, privatization, and especially neglect, have led to their misuse. Lack of controls, education on the subject, non-involvement in urban planning discussions or processes, but also negligence by local institutions are factors that have influenced the situation. But, above all, a weakening of the sense of community is noticeable.

Civic negligence leads to various forms of damage to public spaces, including vandalism. Lack of care and respect for these areas can lead to increased insecurity and various barriers to social interaction.

The importance of civic awareness and the change it can bring regarding this issue

Civic awareness of public spaces implies recognition of the obligations and responsibilities of citizens for the maintenance, care and continuous commitment to all areas that are for the common good. The benefits of caring for common spaces return directly to each citizen, and then to the community and society. The importance of recognizing the value of these areas makes citizens more attentive to the situation in everyday life and encourages positive contribution. The deeper development of a sense of belonging would also bring a valuable impact.

Perhaps it is time to take a more serious look at civic awareness of public spaces, although the time is always right for this act. Respecting public spaces requires civic awareness, for greater well-being, safety, inclusion, and vitality in the community and society.
