Human stress affects the well-being of dogs

Smelling stress in humans affects dogs' emotions and can cause them to make pessimistic choices, according to a new study.

University of Bristol researchers suggest the findings are crucial for kennel dogs and animals being trained for roles such as assistance dogs.

"A pessimistic response reflects a negative emotional state and may be a way for the dog to conserve energy and avoid frustration," the researchers suggest.

The study found that smelling stress through a person's sweat and breath can change the behavior of their best "friend".

Nicola Rooney, senior lecturer in wildlife and conservation at Bristol Veterinary School and lead author of the paper, said:

"Understanding how human stress affects dog welfare is an important consideration for kennel dogs - and when companion dogs are trained for working roles such as assistance dogs," said Nicola Rooney, lecturer at Bristol Veterinary School.

The researchers used an animal optimism/pessimism test, which was conducted on 18 animals. The dogs ranged in age from eight months to 10 years. / THEA
