5 ways to keep salad fresh for a long time

Packaged greens are a grocery list staple for a reason. They can be used in a variety of dishes, which is why there are also many buyers who prefer them.

And if you are one of them, you have probably noticed that after a few days these greens no longer look as fresh as they were in the market.

The good news is that you don't have to keep throwing away those parts of the salad that look like they've lost their freshness.

AgroWeb.org introduces you below with some tips for their storage that will help your salad stay fresh longer, and some simple tips for their selection.

Store the salad in another container

The thin plastic bag in which these types of salads come packaged offers little protection. Damage to the leaves will cause the greens to turn brown faster and look dead. But by moving them from the bag to an airtight plastic container this will no longer happen. Don't compact the leaves too tightly, otherwise they won't have room to breathe, which can cause rapid rot.

Try the tissue paper trick

When you are at home, open the bag of greens. Place some paper towels in an airtight container and place your salad in it. The cloths will absorb moisture which is often the reason why lettuce leaves rot. Replace the towel daily for best results.

Choose hardy greens

Lettuce can wilt quickly, but hardier greens like arugula, spinach and kale tend to stay fresh longer. They are also versatile, and you can use them as a base for salads, soups, juices, etc.

Buy the freshest package possible

Head to the back of the shelf to find the freshest lettuces. The packages at the front are likely to have the closest expiration date. However, if you plan to use these greens soon, you can also choose the bags that are first on the shelf./ AgroWeb.org
