The largest iceberg in the world rotates in the country

Something extraordinary has happened to "A23a", the largest iceberg in the world.

For months it has been spinning in place north of Antarctica, when it should really be "racing" along with Earth's most powerful ocean current.

Scientists say the frozen block is more than twice the size of Greater London.

It's a phenomenon oceanographers call a Taylor plume—and it's possible that A23a might not escape its prison for years.

"Usually you think of icebergs as transient things; they break up and melt. But not this one. A23a is the iceberg that just refuses to 'die,'" said polar expert Mark Brandon.

At the beginning of April this year, A23a entered the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) - an object that moves a hundred times more water around the globe than all the Earth's rivers combined.

"A23a" is a perfect illustration once again of the importance of understanding the shape of the seabed./ CNA
