Heroin trafficking from Albania to Puglia, 11 Albanians under arrest

16 detention measures were executed by the DIA in Bari, of which 7 in prison and 9 under house arrest, for drug trafficking and sale coming from Albania to Puglia.

According to investigations by the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate, launched in July 2014, the drugs, mainly heroin, were imported into Puglia through the port of Bari, hidden in tires and cars, as Italian media report.

The investigation began a year ago after the seizure of a drug production laboratory in Altamura, where investigators found cutting agents, mechanical presses, centrifuges and mixers used to produce half-kilogram blocks of heroin.

At that time, 13.5 kilograms of drugs were seized, which would have brought in approximately 1 million euros on the market, and the Albanian citizen Taulant Hodaj, the target of the precautionary measure executed today, was arrested in flagrante delicto. The wiretaps, phone calls and seizures made subsequently allowed investigators to reconstruct the drug trafficking operation and identify the local leaders of the organization.

Modugno residents Antonio Stragapede and Onofrio Salidu, as well as Albanians Vilson Prifti, Llazar Veshi, Plumb Peposhi and members Eduart and Leonard Halilaj, are currently in custody on charges of possession and trafficking of narcotics. Francesco Sgovio from Modug, Giuseppe Teofilo from Bari, and Albanians Aferdita Murrizi, Ylli and Fatmir Doka, Selim Priska and Dritan Zaganjori are under house arrest.

The investigation began around July 2014 after the seizure of a heroin packaging laboratory in Altamura, where equipment for processing and packaging the drug was found. /CNA
