Fighting continues throughout Gaza

77 Palestinians were killed in the past 24 hours by Israeli attacks on Gaza, health authorities said Sunday, as an Israeli delegation went to Egypt, which is holding a new round of talks to try to secure a ceasefire with Hamas.

The Israeli military said it killed a senior Islamic Jihad militant in an attack on a command center in the courtyard of Al-Aqsa hospital in central Gaza.

"The command center and the terrorists were hit in a high-precision strike aimed at minimizing harm to innocent civilians in the hospital area," the military said.

"The Al-Aqsa Hospital building has not been damaged and its functions have not been affected," the announcement continued.

Islamic Jihad, a militant group and ally of Hamas, has not commented on the incident.

Palestinian health officials and Hamas media said the attack hit several tents inside Al-Aqsa hospital, killing four people and wounding several others, including five journalists.

More than 32,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's military offensive in Gaza since October 7, according to health authorities. The war broke out after Hamas militants infiltrated across the border and attacked communities in southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages.

The two sides have intensified negotiations brokered by Qatar and Egypt aimed at a six-week pause in Israel's offensive in exchange for the release of 40 of the 130 hostages still held by Hamas militants in Gaza.

Hamas wants an agreement to ensure an end to the fighting and the withdrawal of Israeli forces. Israel has denied this, saying it will resume efforts to destroy Hamas's governance and military capabilities.

Hamas is present at the Cairo talks, an official told Reuters on Sunday.

In the southern city of the Gaza Strip, Khan Younis, Israeli forces continued to keep the two main hospitals under blockade, while tanks bombarded the central and eastern areas of the territory./ VOA
