A powerful tornado has struck Mississippi and Alabama, killing at least 23 people in Mississippi. The powerful storm has destroyed buildings and downed power lines.

More people are believed to be trapped under the rubble of the destroyed buildings.

The tornado has moved towards several southern American states, the authorities have warned that in some places the situation may be "life-threatening".

The US National Weather Service confirmed that the tornado has destroyed parts of Mississippi. In two rural towns of this state, it was reported that the tornado reached 113 kilometers per hour and headed towards Alabama.

Sharkey County Coroner Angelia Easton earlier said 13 people were killed by the Mississippi tornado.

The National Weather Service has issued an alert for the storm calling on citizens: "To protect your life, take shelter now."

The service said residents could be injured by objects that could fly in strong winds.

The Storm Prediction Center warned that parts of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee could face powerful tornadoes. The storm is also expected to hit eastern Texas and southeastern Oklahoma, as well as southeastern Missouri and southern Illinois.
