White House: Ukraine has never asked for Western troops

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky never asked for Western troops to fight in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the White House said, as French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated that the idea should not be ruled out.

"President Zelensky is not asking for this, he is only asking for equipment and skills. He has never asked for foreign troops to fight for his country," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters.

Macron earlier on March 5 said he "fully stands behind" statements made last week when he said the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine should not be ruled out, statements that sent shockwaves across Europe.

He also said that Ukraine's allies should not appear cowardly when they support Kiev.

"Of course, we are approaching the moment for Europe in which it will be necessary not to be cowards," Macron said during the visit to the Czech Republic. "And I believe that our two countries are aware of what is happening in Europe, that the war has returned to our land."

He added that the threat has become unstoppable and is spreading "every day" in European countries.

"Is this our war or not? Can we close our eyes and let things flow?” Macron asked. "I don't think so, that's why I called for a strategic increase and I fully stand behind it," the French president added.

The head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service, Sergei Naryshkin, was quoted as telling Russian media that Macron's statements show the irresponsibility of European leaders and that they are leading the world to the brink of nuclear war.

Most European allies have said they will not send troops to Ukraine after Macron said on February 26 that the possibility of Western troops being sent to Ukraine should not be ruled out.

French officials have tried to clarify Macron's statements and minimize criticism, while insisting that there is a need to send a clear message to Russia that it cannot win in Ukraine./ REL
