Ebola outbreak in Africa/ 246 cases of infection and 65 deaths recorded

Africa's top health agency has declared an Ebola outbreak in the eastern Ituri province of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Some 246 cases and 65 deaths have been reported so far, mainly in the gold mining towns of Mongw?lu and Rw?mpara, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

Ebola was first discovered in 1976 in what is now the Republic of Congo and is thought to have been spread by bats. This is the 17th outbreak of the deadly viral disease in the country.

It spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids and through broken skin, causing severe bleeding and organ failure.

Early symptoms include fever, muscle aches, fatigue, headache, and sore throat, and are followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and bleeding.

There is no proven cure for Ebola. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the average mortality rate is around 50%.
