Significant decrease in illegal migration to the EU

Irregular border crossings into the EU are falling, according to the latest Frontex data, which was made available exclusively to the German television studio ARD in Brussels.

This year, by the end of April, around 29,000 people had entered the EU irregularly – that is, without valid documents or without a permit to enter or reside. This is the lowest level in years; in 2023 the number of cases was still three times higher.

The main route of entry remains the Mediterranean route, starting in Libya and ending on the Italian coast. This is followed by the Eastern Mediterranean route – via Turkey to Greece and Cyprus. Both of these routes each account for around a third of all irregular entries into the EU.

More than 1,200 dead in the Mediterranean

According to Frontex, this confirms a clear trend: that throughout 2025, irregular entries fell by more than a quarter compared to the previous year. Cooperation with partner countries, for example on the coast of North Africa, has contributed to this decline, among other things. In exchange for EU funds, these countries prevent people from setting off towards the EU - they are also increasingly fighting smuggling networks.

Also, difficult weather conditions at the beginning of the year appear to have deterred some people from making the dangerous migration. However, the loss of life in the Mediterranean is high. According to the International Organization for Migration, more than 1,200 people have lost their lives in the Mediterranean so far this year./ DW
