Blocked for several hours/ 18 miners rescued from Trepça mine

Eighteen miners, who were trapped for several hours in the Stanterg mine, have left the mine, Gani Osmani, representative of the Trepca Workers' Union, confirmed to Radio Free Europe.

The miners had been trapped hundreds of meters underground since 1:30 a.m. on May 14, metallurgical giant Trepca announced earlier, after a power outage.

The company said that at the time of the power outage there were 47 workers in the mine, while 29 of them managed to leave and reach the surface.

"According to information from the field, a line conductor has been disconnected at the entrance to the flotation transformer, and as a result, the conductor insulators have been damaged, causing a fire in the transformer that supplies the flotation with electricity. Damage has also been identified in other conductor installations in the transformer," the announcement said.

The company said that workers trapped in Stantërg – located near Mitrovica – are safe, as crews are working to restore electricity supply.

Earlier, Osmani from the Trepça Workers' Union said that the rescue team is on standby, a team that operates within the complex.

"We are communicating with the miners, their condition is stable. The team is ready to respond or send them food, but the electricity problem is expected to be fixed soon," he stated earlier.

According to Osmani, teams from Trepca and the Kosovo Electricity Distribution Company (KEDS) were working to fix the problem so that the miners could exit using elevators.

"..because the terrain is unsuitable for walking. It's over 800 meters uphill, there are stairs, there's a lot of dust, it's not easy to walk," he said./REL
