US considers sending HAWK system to Ukraine

The United States is considering the possibility of sending the HAWK air defense system to Ukraine.

The anti-aircraft system is older and would be taken from US military stockpiles to help Kiev's forces shoot down Russian drones and missiles, US officials said.

The HAWK is a medium-range surface-to-air missile interceptor system, and if sent to Ukraine, it would be a more advanced system than the Stinger — which is a shorter-range air defense system — that the U.S. has already offered to Ukraine.

HAWK is built on Vietnam-era technology, but the system has been updated several times since then.

The HAWK system is the predecessor of the PATRIOT missile defense system manufactured by Raytheon Technologies, which the US has said it will not send to Ukraine, US officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity to Reuters.

US President Joe Biden has promised his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, that Washington will provide Kiev with advanced air defense systems, following a devastating wave of airstrikes carried out this month by Russia against civilian targets and Ukrainian infrastructure.
