US Secretary of State Marco Rubio changes name to travel to China

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is visiting China this midweek, accompanying US President Donald Trump.

Rubio's trip to the country that imposed sanctions on him twice during his time as a senator has not gone unnoticed by the general public.

Despite Chinese embassy spokesman Liu Pengyu saying that China allows Rubio to enter the territory, the secretary appears to have found a diplomatic solution. This was through a linguistic change in the first syllable of his surname with a different Chinese character.

Translating Western names into Chinese characters is not a simple process, which is why many Western public figures end up with more than one Chinese version of their name.

In fact, Trump also has two Chinese names: Telangpu and Chuanpu, which are widely used by the Chinese government and local media. /CNA
