From the Iran War to Taiwan/What Trump Said Before Leaving for Beijing

US President Donald Trump, as he prepared to depart for his trip to Beijing, spoke to reporters about the topics that could be discussed during his meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Trump said he would have a “long conversation” with Xi about the Iran war , but downplayed the idea that he would need China’s help to end the conflict. He said the top priority in his mind is preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon.

The US president also said he would mention two sensitive figures currently in detention in China: Jimmy Lai, a former Hong Kong media mogul and high-profile government critic who was sentenced to 20 years in prison earlier this year; and Ezra Jin Mingri, a Christian pastor who was involved in a mass shooting at various congregations last October.

Regarding Taiwan, Trump said that this issue always comes up in such conversations, adding that he believed it would be his counterpart who would raise this topic.

The U.S. Department of Defense announced a $12.4 million military sale to Taiwan late Tuesday as Trump was leaving for Beijing. China's ruling Communist Party has vowed to "reunify" with Taiwan, despite never having controlled the self-governing, democratic island. /CNA
