"The 51st State"/ Trump publishes map of Venezuela with American flag

The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has made a post on social networks showing a map of Venezuela, covered with the US flag. Trump has accompanied the photo of the map with the short caption: "The 51st State."

The post, published as Trump was en route to China where he is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping, comes a day after Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, said her country had never considered becoming the 51st state, even after US forces captured ousted leader Nicolas Maduro in January.

Meanwhile, Trump told Fox News that he was considering turning the South American country into a new state.

Rodriguez, for her part, has overseen an adjustment in relations with the United States since taking control of the country, enacting reforms that reopened Venezuela's mining and oil sectors to foreign companies, particularly from the United States. /CNA
