State visit to China/ Trump reveals first request for Xi Jinping

United States President Donald Trump has made his first request to his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during his state visit to China.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president described his Chinese counterpart as a leader of "extraordinary distinction", while announcing that he would ask him to "open up" China to American companies.

"It is an honor to have Jensen, Elon, Tim Apple, Larry Fink, Stephen Schwarzmann, Kelly Ortberg (Boeing), Brian Sikes (Cargill), Jane Fraser (Citi), Larry Culp (GE Aerospace), David Solomon (Goldman Sachs), Sanjay Mehrotra (Micron), Cristiano Amon (Qualcomm) and many others travel to the Great Country of China, where I will ask President Xi, a Leader of extraordinary distinction, to 'open up' China so that these great people can work their magic and help elevate the People's Republic to even greater heights! In fact, I promise that when we are together, which will be in a few hours, I will make this my first request. I have never seen or heard of an idea that would be more beneficial to our great countries ," Trump's post said.

However, the US president did not mention any plans to discuss the Iran war during his trip.

He has urged Xi in recent weeks to use his influence to persuade Tehran, an ally of China, to agree to end the war or at least reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Before his departure from the White House on Tuesday, Trump claimed he would not need to talk about the conflict with Xi because the US has Iran very much under control. /CNA
