US-Iran negotiations are at a standstill/What you need to know about

Negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain at a standstill after President Donald Trump called Iran's latest counterproposal to end the war "a piece of junk" over the weekend.

Trump is on his way to China, where war will be a big topic of conversation during his high-stakes summit with leader Xi Jinping.

China's role:

The US president left on Tuesday afternoon and said he planned to have a long talk about the issue with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. However, he played down the idea that he would need China's help to end the conflict. China has long been a close ally of Iran and is the main importer of Iranian oil.

"Beijing is seen as a potential mediator between Washington and Tehran," said Iranian Ambassador to China Rahmani Fazli, according to the Iranian state news agency IRNA.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will accompany Trump on his trip.

Negotiations:

"Trump is confident that Iran will stop enriching uranium and abandon any attempt to build a nuclear weapon," he said during an interview on WABC on Tuesday.

The president said he has been directly engaged with Iranian officials during the talks.

He told reporters at the White House that the US has the situation with Iran very much under control and either we will make a deal or they will be destroyed.

Trump also said he doesn't think about the financial situation of Americans when it comes to negotiating a deal. "The most important thing, by far, is that Iran does not have nuclear weapons," he said./ CNA
