At least 10 dead from an explosion in a Chinese mine

At least 10 people have died and six others are missing following an accident at a mine in the central Chinese city of Pingdingshan, Chinese officials said on Saturday.

They have vowed that search operations will continue and that security checks will begin at all mines in the city.

Safety inspections at the Pingdingshan coal-rich site in Henan province could halt coal production there and limit coal supplies.

Last November, coal prices in China rose after the country's government vowed to increase safety controls following a rise in the number of people killed in accidents in the main coal-producing region of Shanxi.

Pingdinshan's emergency management office said the accident occurred on Friday afternoon as a result of a gas explosion in a mine.

By Saturday noon, 10 dead and six missing were confirmed.

The agency said it will make concrete plans to rescue the missing and investigate the cause of the accident.

China's official news agency Xinhua reported that 425 people were working underground when the accident occurred. /REL
