Finland will extend the closure of its border with Russia

Finland will extend the closure of its border with Russia, which was set to end on January 15, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Sari Essayah told the public broadcaster on Wednesday.

" The border will remain closed, " Essayah said when asked if the border would remain closed for another month.

Finnish media had previously reported that the government would extend the measure.

Finland closed its border to stop a growing number of asylum seekers from entering the country and said Moscow had orchestrated the influx, a charge the Kremlin denies.

In November last year, Finland announced the closure of its last border crossing with Russia, amid concerns that Moscow is using migrants as part of a "hybrid war" to destabilize the Nordic country, following its NATO membership.

The growing number of migrants gathered at border crossings has strengthened Finland's belief that Russian authorities are trying to push migrants to travel to Finland, with the aim of destabilizing the country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned in December last year of unspecified "problems" with Finland, and said he had ordered the creation of a new military district in the border regions with the Nordic country.

Finland abandoned its policy of neutrality shortly after Russia launched its war in Ukraine in February 2022, and last year became NATO's 31st member.

Since then, Finland has increased the number of military units on training missions, and has allowed NATO planes to patrol its airspace, a move that has angered Russia./ REL
