Russia bombs Ukraine during the visit of the new French minister to Kiev

France's new foreign minister, Stephane Sejourne, assured Kiev during a surprise visit on Saturday that Ukraine can count on support from France, following a reshuffle of the French government cabinet last week.

Sejourne said Ukraine would remain France's priority, even as Moscow attacked Ukrainian regions with missiles and drones on Saturday.

"Ukraine is and remains a priority of France. In Ukraine, the protection of the essential principles of international law is taking place," Sejourne said at a press conference in Kiev alongside his Ukrainian counterpart, Dmytro Kuleba.

He added that Russia is hoping that Ukraine and its supporters will tire, adding that "our determination is unwavering, we will not weaken."

Kuleba thanked Sejournen for visiting Kiev "despite the next big bombardment from Russia. I am grateful to him for his courage, which did not turn back".

Sejourne arrived in the Ukrainian capital hours after Russia began attacking its southern and eastern regions with missiles and drones.

Ukraine is struggling to secure money from the United States and the European Union for its fight against the Russian occupier, with the latter facing opposition from fellow member Hungary.

The French Foreign Ministry posted a photo of Sejourne and wrote that he "arrived in Kiev for his field visit in order to continue France's diplomatic action there and to reiterate France's commitment to allies and civilian populations."

Earlier in the day, the General Staff of the Ukrainian army said that Russia fired 40 missiles and drones in the direction of Ukrainian territory.

According to him, the air defense repelled eight attacks, while another 20 did not hit the target.

It is reported that the targets of the Russian attacks were Kharkiv, Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

In some regions of Ukraine, sirens were released to warn of airstrikes./ REL
