The Speaker of the Assembly of North Macedonia, Talat Xhaferi, on Tuesday, September 13, rejected the initiative of the Macedonian opposition party VMRO-DPMNE to organize a referendum to cancel the Agreement with Bulgaria.

The VMRO DPMNE, led by Hristijan Mickovski, on September 9 submitted the initiative for a referendum on the grounds that "the agreement with Bulgaria is anti-national and anti-state, as it endangers Macedonian identity and language".

Përmes një komunikate, kryetari i Kuvendit, Talat Xhaferi, tha se “iniciativa për referendum nuk është në përputhje me Kushtetutën”, në të cilën, sipas kreut të Kuvendit, thuhet se “marrëveshjet ndërkombëtare që janë ratifikuar janë pjesë e rendit të brendshëm juridik dhe nuk mund të ndryshohen me ligj”.

Marrëveshja me Bullgarinë ishte propozuar nga Franca dhe parasheh që gjatë procesit të bisedimeve me Bashkimin Evropian, Maqedonia e Veriut të zgjidhë çështjet e hapura lidhur me aspektet historike, ndërsa ato për gjuhën dhe identitetin është thënë se nuk do të jenë pjesë e bisedimeve.

Sipas marrëveshjes, Maqedonia e Veriut para nisjes formale të bisedimeve për anëtarësim në bllok, duhet të ndryshojë Kushtetutën për të përfshirë pakicën bullgare në preambulën e saj.

The amendment of the Macedonian Constitution is done with two-thirds of the votes, which the parliamentary majority does not have, as the VMRO DPMNE has said that its deputies will vote against.

On July 16, North Macedonia ratified the Agreement with Bulgaria, while on July 19, negotiations for membership with the European Union began.

North Macedonia gained the status of a candidate state in 2005, but it was not able to start negotiations with the EU initially due to the dispute with Greece over the name issue and more recently with Bulgaria, which in 2020 decided vetoes by conditioning its removal on the resolution of the dispute over language, identity and historical issues./ REL
