Ukrainian troops continued to advance successfully on Sunday in their counteroffensive in the northeastern part of the country.

Kiev's progress in recapturing Russian-held areas in the Kharkiv region forced Moscow to withdraw its troops to avoid being encircled, leaving behind significant numbers of weapons and ammunition as they hurriedly fled as the war marked the day of her 200th on Sunday.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in a video speech on Saturday night that "the Russian army these days is demonstrating the best it can do - showing its back."

The Russian pushback marked the biggest battlefield success for Ukrainian forces since they thwarted a Russian attempt to capture the capital, Kiev, early in the war. The Kharkiv campaign caught Moscow by surprise, which had moved many of its troops from the region to the south in anticipation of a counteroffensive in that area.

In an attempt to justify the pushback, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Saturday that the withdrawal of troops from Izium and other areas was intended to reinforce Moscow's troops in the neighboring Donetsk region to the south.
