The Swedish government has proposed tightening the requirements for obtaining Swedish citizenship through registration, as well as strengthening protections for children and adults facing vulnerable situations, the Swedish Ministry of Justice revealed in a press release.

The Minister of Migration, Maria Malmer Stenergard emphasized that Swedish citizenship should be granted easily, reports  SchengenVisaInfo.com.

The proposed changes, which could come into force on 1 October 2024, aim to increase security for individuals who obtain Swedish citizenship through notification. 

Anyone suspected of or convicted of a crime that could be a threat to Sweden's public safety or security could be barred from obtaining Swedish citizenship, the government proposes. In addition, those who are suspected or proven to be associated with certain groups and organizations may suffer the same consequences.

In addition to tightening the regulations for obtaining citizenship, the government is also proposing changes regarding exemptions from Swedish citizenship. These changes aim to increase protection for children and adults in vulnerable situations. The aim is to prevent individuals from giving up Swedish citizenship against their will, especially in cases involving oppressive circumstances.

Candidates in Sweden can acquire citizenship at birth, through adaptation, registration or application, with those who acquire citizenship by notification having to meet fewer requirements. /CNA
