Clashes erupt in Senate after debate over US military intervention

A Mexican Senate meeting turned into a boxing ring after one of the members became angry after he was not allowed to speak.

The altercation occurred between two high-ranking senators towards the end of a session where a heated debate took place over the possibility of American military intervention in the country.

While the national anthem was being played, disgruntled senator Alejandro Moreno – president of the opposition PRI party – came to the podium and grabbed Senate President Gerardo Fernández Noroña, of the ruling Morena party, by the arm, and then everything deteriorated and escalated to physical violence.

Moreno said on social media that he had confronted Noroña because the ruling party had changed the session's agenda to prevent the opposition from speaking.

Noroña insisted that opposition senators were to blame. "They gathered against me. Is this freedom of expression?" he said.

He said that during the session they had debated the American military intervention, which he had accused the opposition parties of supporting.

He also said he intended to file a lawsuit against Moreno, claiming that Moreno had threatened to kill him. He also said he would seek the expulsion of Moreno and other opposition members involved in the brawl./ CNA
