Massive flooding in Mexico/ 64 people dead, 65 missing

Massive flooding in central and eastern Mexico has left at least 64 people dead and 65 missing.

Flooding, caused by heavy rainfall, was reported mainly in the states of Veracruz, Hidalgo and Puebla, where several rivers overflowed their banks and roads and bridges were destroyed. 

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said thousands of troops as well as ships, planes and helicopters had been deployed to help search and rescue operations.

The military will help distribute aid to affected areas, with more than 10,000 troops deployed, along with rescue equipment and vehicles.

It was also announced that shelters were open for those displaced from their homes. Mexico has been hit by torrential rains throughout 2025, with a rainfall record set in the capital Mexico City. /CNA
