Middle East Trip/ President Trump Arrives in Egypt for Gaza Summit

President Donald Trump arrived in Egypt minutes ago for a global summit on the future of Gaza as he tries to advance peace in the Middle East, after visiting Israel to celebrate a US-brokered ceasefire with Hamas.

The quick trip, which included a speech to the Knesset in Jerusalem earlier in the day, comes at a fragile moment of hope to end two years of war between Israel and Hamas.

The presidents of the US and Egypt are chairing a meeting of world leaders dubbed the "Peace Summit" on Monday to support an end to the more than two-year-old Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, following an extraordinary ceasefire deal.

The office of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi said the summit aims to end the war in Gaza and open a new page of regional peace and stability in line with the vision of US President Donald Trump.

Ahead of the meeting, Egypt's foreign minister said it was also essential that Israel and Hamas fully implement the first phase of the agreement so that the parties, with international support, can begin negotiations for the second phase.

The success of Trump's vision for peace in the Middle East is his continued commitment to the process, including exerting pressure on the parties, engaging and even deploying on the ground international forces that are expected to carry out peacekeeping duties in the next phase, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said./CNA
