Port tariffs come into effect/US-China trade tensions return

New tariffs on US ships arriving at Chinese ports take effect today, as trade tensions between Washington and Beijing escalate.

These tariffs, which China says are intended to protect its shipping industry from discriminatory measures, apply to ships owned, operated, built or flagged by the US, but not to ships built by China.

The tariffs also come as a sign of retaliation, as the US will begin imposing tariffs on Chinese ships arriving at its ports starting today. Beijing announced the taxes last week, along with measures to tighten controls on rare earth exports.

US President Donald Trump responded with a threat of an additional 100% tariff on China. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, new US tariffs on imported lumber, kitchen cabinets and upholstered furniture, most of which come from China, went into effect.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Monday that Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet in South Korea in late October as they try to ease trade tensions between the world's two largest economies. /CNA
