Former French President Sarkozy sentenced to 5 years in Paris prison

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy will begin serving his five-year prison sentence on October 21. RTL France reported on Monday that Sarkozy will serve his sentence at La Sante prison in the 14th arrondissement of Paris.

According to reports, the prison has a special section for prisoners considered vulnerable, where the former head of state could serve his sentence separately from other prisoners.

Last month, Sarkozy was convicted of criminal conspiracy and corruption. The court found him guilty of receiving funds from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

Sarkozy will become the first former French president to be imprisoned.

Sarkozy could be released from prison if he files a successful request for release at a French appeals court. /CNA
