Parisians have voted to ban electric scooter hire in their city, dealing a blow to scooter operators and a triumph for road safety campaigners.

Almost 90% of votes cast on Sunday favored a ban on battery-powered devices, official results showed.

The referendum was called in response to the increase in accidents.

Of the 1.38 million people on the city's electoral register, just over 103,000 people took part in the vote, according to official figures. Of these, over 91,300 people voted against scooters.

Parisi ishte një nga qytetet e para që miratoi automjetet elektrike, por kritikët argumentojnë se ato po shkaktonin më shumë dëm sesa mirë.

Kishte një shqetësim në rritje me mënyrën se si disa njerëz po drejtonin skuterët, duke u endur nëpër trafik, duke shmangur këmbësorët në trotuare dhe duke arritur shpejtësinë 17 mph (27 km/h).

Kishte gjithashtu kritika se grupet e e-skuterëve të parkuar në trotuare ishin një tjetër problem.

Në vitin 2021, një grua 31-vjeçare italiane u vra pasi u godit nga një skuter elektronik që mbante dy persona. Ajo u rrëzua dhe goditi kokën në trotuar, duke pësuar një atak kardiak.

Por operatorët e e-skuterëve argumentuan se automjetet përbënin një pjesë të vogël të aksidenteve të përgjithshme të trafikut në qytet.
