WHO warning: Alcohol is causing thousands of cancer cases and costing Europe

Alcohol is a leading cause of cancer across Europe and experts say stronger government policies to curb alcohol drinking could prevent thousands of cancer cases and deaths each year.

In the European Union alone, the subregion with the highest alcohol consumption in the world, alcohol caused more than 111,000 new cases of cancer in 2020, according to a new scientific review by the World Health Organization's cancer research agency, known as the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Worldwide, this number reached about 741,000 cases, with men accounting for over 70% of cancers.

Beyond the health consequences, the economic cost is also considerable: according to the WHO, premature deaths from alcohol-related cancers cost 4.58 billion euros in 2018.

"The WHO European Region, and especially EU countries, are paying a very high price for alcohol in preventable cancers and broken families, as well as costing taxpayers billions," said Dr. Gundo Weiler, who leads prevention and health promotion efforts at the WHO office in Europe. /CNA
