Pope Leo XIV begins 11-day tour of four African countries, first stop in Algeria

Pope Leo XIV traveled to Algeria today, in what is considered a historic visit, as it is the first time a pope has traveled to this Muslim-majority country.

The pope arrived in the capital, Algiers, as part of an 11-day tour of four African countries, aimed at drawing global attention to the continent, which is home to more than a fifth of the world's Catholics, according to Vatican statistics.

The Pope is scheduled to visit the Great Mosque of Algiers and the Basilica of Our Lady of Africa.

Pope Leo XIV will travel to Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea, visiting 11 cities and towns and covering nearly 18,000 kilometers in 18 flights. Unlike Algeria, the three sub-Saharan countries have populations where more than half identify as Catholic. /CNA
