California gubernatorial race: Democratic congressman withdraws after sexual

US Congressman Eric Swalwell has withdrawn from the race for governor of California amid growing pressure over sexual harassment allegations.

The Democrat has been accused by four women of misconduct ranging from sexual harassment to rape. He has denied the allegations and vowed to defend himself with facts.

Key allies had called on him to withdraw from the gubernatorial race, in which he was projected as one of the frontrunners among Democratic candidates.

His departure comes at a crucial moment in the open primary race, just weeks before voters receive their mail-in ballots ahead of the June 2 election to replace outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom and choose the leadership of the nation's most populous state.

Swalwell's decision to suspend his race comes two days after the first allegations were published in the San Francisco Chronicle. At least 10 candidates are expected to be on the ballot in the primary, which will include both Democrats and Republicans.

Republicans typically have a hard time winning statewide races in the Democratic-majority state, but a large Democratic group has divided the state's liberal voters, leaving two Republicans near the top in early primary polls. /CNA
