According to a new study, almost a third of the world's adult population did not do the recommended physical activity during 2022. The Eastern Mediterranean region and Southeast Asia have the highest levels of physical inactivity, at nearly 40% of the population. In Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, residents agree that most people should do more physical exercise.

In Jakarta, Indonesia, there is a favorite sports complex for the locals, who frequent it often.

However, about 40% of the inhabitants in this part of the globe do not do enough physical movement, says a study recently published in the medical journal 'The Lancet Global Health'.

The heavy workload makes it difficult for people in Jakarta to find time for physical education.

“In Indonesia, many people find it difficult to create free time, as many are required to have a heavy workload. This means they do not have enough time to exercise to maintain their health. They only think about work", says Daniel Soekarso, who comes to run in this sports complex.

Other residents blame social media, which has created a more passive lifestyle.

“I agree and believe the results of the study, because from what I see in the environment around me, children, teenagers and adults are usually busy with their devices and social media. Also, diseases such as cholesterol, high blood sugar and other diseases that we thought only happened to the elderly have started at a young age," says Kinan Randy, a first-year student in Jakarta.

The new study says that about 1.8 billion people, or about a third of adults around the globe, did not meet recommended levels of physical activity. This means they may be more vulnerable to disease.

The study was compiled by scientists from the World Health Organization and other academics. Worrying is the tendency of the population to become less active. This trend accelerated by 5% during the period 2010-2022.

The least active people are found in the eastern Mediterranean region and south-east Asia, with nearly 40% of the population not exercising. In contrast, people are much more active in other regions, such as in Europe, where only 25% do not exercise, or in Africa, with only 16%.

Worldwide, women tend to do less physical exercise than men, with inactivity levels at 34%, compared to 29% for men. Also, sedentary life increases after the age of 60.

The new study also had positive conclusions. In nearly half of the world, progress has been made to increase physical activity over the past decade.

Even if they continue at the current pace, 22 countries of the world can reach by 2030 the objective that 85% of the population do physical exercises regularly./ VOA
