Biden defends his rhetoric against Trump
The President of the United States, Joe Biden

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, defended his rhetoric against former President Donald Trump, in his first interview since the assassination of the latter, at the weekend.

Biden and Trump will face off in the November presidential election. Speaking to NBC, Biden said that his campaign has a duty to speak openly about the threats that a second term of Trump would bring, and added that the words his are not the ones to be tamed.

However, he said it was a "mistake" to say that it is "time to put Trump in the center of the target".

According to reports from Politico, Biden made the comments in a conversation with several donors days before the assassination attempt against Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

In the interview given to NBC, Biden said that with this he thought that his Democrats should focus more on Trump, his policies and the false statements he made during a presidential debate last month.

During the interview, Biden made it clear that he will not withdraw from the presidential race, despite calls from some in his own party to do so, due to his poor performance in that debate.

"I understand why people say: God, he's 81 years old. Wow! What will he do when he's 83 years old, 84 years old?... It's a legitimate question to ask," Biden said.

He added that he trusts the voters who supported him in the Democratic primary. "I hear them," Biden said. In a speech from the Oval Office on July 14, Biden condemned the attack on Trump and called on Americans to "take a step back," saying "the political rhetoric in this country has gotten too heated."

Trump was wounded in the ear during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. One spectator was killed in the shooting, while two others were seriously injured.

The suspected gunman, Thomas Crooks, 20, was shot and killed by the Secret Service, but his motive remains unclear./ Voa
