Extraordinary photo/ The moment when the bullet passes very close to
Donald Trump

The picture is outstanding. Shot by a New York Times photographer, it shows what appears to be a bullet in flight, passing well past former President Donald Trump's head.

The BBC has made a summary of the event showing what weapon was used to assassinate Trump.

Security services say an AR-15 was recovered from the scene and is nicknamed "America's Rifle."

It typically fires a 5.56 mm round, the NATO standard, although it can be converted to fire other calibers. The AR-15 would easily be able to kill at that range, as evidenced by one case (at least) in the crowd.

According to Justin Crump of security analyst Sibylline, for assault weapons to do maximum damage "the energy in the round needs to be dissipated, which requires a solid stop."

It is the transfer of energy, and not just the physical displacement caused by the bullet, that makes weapons so destructive.

The fact that the bullet struck President Trump's ear means that the potentially destructive energy contained within the round was not transferred.

Had the bullet been just an inch to the right, or the former president's head at a slightly different angle, all that kinetic energy would have been transferred to him, with devastating consequences.

In short, Trump was inches away from death./ CNA
